In Memoriam: Mrs. Nabila Jabbour Fares (‘56)

The LAU community mourns the passing of Mrs. Nabila Jabbour Fares (‘56), a trailblazing alumna whose life was defined by service, compassion and leadership.
A graduate in Social Work from the Beirut College for Women—as LAU was known back then—Mrs. Fares became the first woman mayor (mukhtara) in Lebanon, serving El Rabiyeh since 1985. She co-founded and presided over the Civil Association for the Safeguard of the Child in Lebanon (ACSAUVEL), empowering children and adults with special needs, and contributed to numerous national organizations dedicated to child welfare, community development, and the preservation of Lebanese craftsmanship.
Her lifelong dedication earned her national and international recognition, including the Lebanese Order of Merit (2022), and two Icons of Gratitude, from both the Maronite Order and the Mount Lebanon Greek Orthodox Archdiocese. In 2023, LAU bestowed her with the Alumni Recognition Award for her philanthropic work and enduring impact on society.
Mrs. Fares cherished her alma mater, recalling her student days with fondness and attributing to them the values that shaped her career of service. Her legacy will continue to inspire generations of LAU alumni and all those who believe in the power of education, leadership and giving back.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.
